Kerengani is a variety of Northern Tat spoken in the village of Kerengân in the Varzaqan district of northern East Azerbaijan. Along with Harzani, Khoynrudi, and extinct varieties formerly spoken in Klasur, Mazgar, and Arazin, this language forms the northern branch of the Tat languages. Kerengan village, located in the forests of Arasbaran and near the border with Azerbaijan, now has a population of about fifty people, all of whom except children speak Kerengani. The village’s population was once larger, reportedly as high as 600, but in the past few decades most of them have migrated to Tabriz and Urmia. Kerengani is also spoken by a few people in the two villages of Vanestân and Mulk Talesh, all of whom are women who have married Turkic-speaking men in these two villages in the past.
